‘Busy’ seems to be one of the most accurate words to describe your typical entrepreneur. Sure, they are often creative and collaborative, dynamic and driven, passionate and plenty of other phrases.

But busy is a perfect way to describe everything they must take care of especially at the startup stage. Even with good support and skilled people to delegate/share duties, leaders are stretched in many directions, especially where project management comes in.

Unless someone has a background in this type of planning, good project management is not always that easy. Staying organized and keeping everything and everyone on task can be a challenge, but one that often yields positive results.

Busy entrepreneurs can always look for ways to improve their project management abilities, including being able to:

  • Determine priority. Rather than trying to coordinate multiple projects at once, a smarter approach is to figure out which ones are the most vital in terms of future growth and service, and which ones can wait a little longer. This could be done with the entire team’s input and relieve some of the stress to get it all done at once.
  • Determine scope. Learning more details about each project can help keep focus like the project’s name, estimated completion, the project lead and a short summary. This helps when new people come aboard or others want more details. How will people know the best way to get questions answered.
  • Determine process. Even if you have a start and end date for reference purposes, consider when your team will try to tackle each project. Will you get together every day? Once a week? One every two weeks? Does the whole team need to come to every meeting or would some of them prefer to delegate or show occasionally?
  • Determine possible outcomes. If all goes well, the project can be moved to the ‘completed’ stage with perhaps some notes about the process. If something is still in motion, there’s always the possibility of delays or something going wrong, requiring the group to consider leaving or switching projects.
